Two men were killed and another seriously injured after a private school van collided with a two-wheeler near Sundararajapuram junction at Sempatti in Dindigul district on the evening of July 9, 2026. Police said the van was transporting students back to villages in the area when the accident occurred.
According to police, the school van was being driven by Moorthi, 63, of Chengattampatti. As the vehicle attempted to cross the Dindigul–Vathalagundu road to proceed towards Salaiputhur, it struck a two-wheeler approaching from the opposite direction.
The motorcycle rider, Vellaichamy, 24, a daily-wage worker from Ottupatti, died at the scene. Two pillion riders, Kumar, 47, and Shanmugam, 44, suffered serious injuries and were taken to Dindigul Government Medical College Hospital. Kumar later died from his injuries, while Shanmugam continued to receive treatment.
The collision was severe enough to shatter the windscreen of the school van, but police said the 10 schoolchildren travelling in the vehicle escaped without injuries. Authorities arranged an alternative vehicle so the children could be safely taken home.
Pattiveeranpatti police registered a case and began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash, including how the vehicles approached the junction and whether traffic or driving violations contributed to the collision.
The accident once again highlights the importance of careful driving at road junctions, particularly for vehicles carrying schoolchildren and on highways with frequent two-wheeler traffic.
